All Signs Point to “Go”, Part 1

So much has been happening in our little world lately that I honestly don’t know where to begin.  I don’t want to leave anything out but since we are all limited on time, I will just share our crazy story from yesterday’s excursions.

A few months ago, a few of our friends called us about a “bargain” vacation that we couldn’t pass up.  And I have to give it to them, they were right the price on that vacation was incredible!  It would have cost us more to stay home then to pack our bags and go sit on a beach in Mexico.  So needless to say, it was a no-brainer.  We told them that we were “in” and were looking forward to relaxing.

However, WE didn’t book our trip immediately like our friends, so we ended up paying a bit more.  Granted the vacation was still a bargain, but knowing that it could have been less expensive hurt just a bit.  We were still excited and looking forward to our vacation.  Corey turned to me and asked if I had my passport, I assured him that I did (even showing it to him).  We are set to go… or so we thought.

I was updating our family calendar a few weeks ago and I asked him about our trip.  I am so excited to be taking a vacation and I love being able to think about it and plan for it… and on those days that are chaotic, I get to close my eyes and think of ocean waves crashing against the shore line and I immediately feel refreshed and well equipped to handle the situations at hand.   Unfortunately, there was a HUGE problem.  Well HUGE for me.  My definition of a HUGE problem and Corey’s definition of a HUGE problem are totally different.  To me…. the house flooding: “Aw, no big deal.  We can clean that up.  No reason to get excited about it.  Shut the water off & grab some towels.”  But if it deals with people… “Oh dear, the sky is falling”.  I am a people-pleaser.  I always have been.  I always want everyone to be happy and comfortable.  And yes, if someone was to ask me for one wish, I would probably ask for world peace among EVERYONE.  (I know it’s not possible and that life may be boring without conflict… but you have NOT met my husband then.  Life will never be boring as long as he is here.  The man is pure entertainment).

Any who, back to updating that calendar (sorry, it is late)… while updating I noticed that we were double booked, but Corey & his calm self took care of everything.  I’m glad that he did, because I would not have been able to do that.  Either way, I would have had to disappoint someone (telling our friends that we couldn’t go on the vacation would have been difficult but I wouldn’t have wanted to miss his lifelong friend’s wedding reception either).  This is one of the reasons that we are so great together.  When our house floods, kids create a disaster, or something needs to be fixed… Corey calls me.  But when the sky falls I have him to come save the day.  Thank you God. :-)

So then on Monday, Corey came to me with another problem.  He didn’t have a passport and couldn’t find his birth certificate.  He asked about mine again.  And I couldn’t wait to show it to him again, (see honey I was responsible).  Then he opened it up.  “Uh Jess, this has your maiden name on it.”

Now I’m thanking God that I kept the responsible comment to myself… otherwise I’d still hear about that one on our 10 year anniversary.  “Remember when YOU claimed that YOU were the responsible one because YOU already had YOUR passport…. with your MAIDEN name on it”.  I love to harass and tease Corey but I am so thankful that I chose not to poke fun at that moment.  That would have been all the ammunition that he needed to tease me back for YEARS.

So there we were, neither of us have passports, with only X amount of days before the trip.  We both wanted to tease the other, but we didn’t have ground to stand on… so we just laughed at each other instead.

Corey went off to work & I called Houston’s passport office, made an appointment, and booked a few flights to Houston for the next day. (I had to use a gift certificate travel voucher that Corey won… we were saving that for another vacation later this year.  It was disappointing, but I was glad to have the voucher and it not be more money out of our pockets).

(To be continued…I’m sleepy…)
